GH (Frowth hormone or Somatotropin) is a protein made up of a chain of 191 amino acids. GH is one of the most abundant hormones secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Once released by the pituitary gland it is quickly taken in by the liver and converted into growth factors, the most important one being IGF-1.  These growth factors are the messengers that carry the messages to the cells of the body.  This communication regulates the growth of cells, telling them when to live and when to die. Cell reproduction slows unless the cells are promtoed by the growth factors of GH. GH is directly responsible for stimulating tissue repair, cell replacement, brain function, enzyme function, lean body mass and bone density.

During the growth and development stage of life, GH is responsible for proper growth and development. Once adulthood is reached GH is still important in that it effects almost every cell of the body and helps to keep the cells and systems healthy. Healthy levels of GH account for things such as lean muscle, libido and sexual function, however, as age progresses the pituitary gland releases lower and lower amounts of HGH into the bloodstream for the body to use. Clinical studies show a direct correlation between decreasing GH levels in adults and the effects of aging.

Decreased levels of GH and other hormones reduce the body’s ability to function properly. For instance, the growth hormones that are responsible for forming muscle mass; human growth hormone, testosterone, and thyroid, all drop dramatically as we get older. Somatropin levels are extremely high in our youth keeping us energetic and healthy. By age 60, GH levels decrease by 80% from that of age 20.  For this reason, the ratio of fat in our body increases and the ratio of lean muscle decreases even if we exercise and eat properly.

Hormones regulate and repair the body. When hormone levels drop, it causes a decrease in the body’s ability to regulate and heal itself. The different hormones are connected to each other, when one is affected the others will probably also be affected.  Good communication between the endocrine glands keeps the body in homeostasis but with aging, our hormones decrease so this communication slows down and the endocrine system does not respond as well to the body’s needs.

Researchers have found that in untreated GH deficient adults body composition was abnormal with increased fat mass, decreased lean body mass, decreased muscle fat ratio, visceral obesity, reduced extracellular fluid volume and reduced bone mineral content. Furthermore, two independent groups reported impaired psychological well being as compared to treated subjects with normal human growth hormone levels.
